How to improve your brand with Custom Perfume Packaging for less
What do we mean by custom perfume packaging? Custom perfume packaging means the development of totally new perfume bottles and cap moulds and a new outer packaging for a perfume. It usually involves the creation of new moulds, therefore a longer lead-time. Without further ado, let’s look at what is involved when we create custom perfume packaging and what are the cost ranges for making it.

Bottle mould development
In order to make a new bottle mould for custom perfume packaging, we need to have certain information from the market:
- bottle volume requirement
- bottle weight requirement
- inputs to help us to design
After receipt of the client brief our design team works on sketches and ideas for bottles. We brainstorm and discuss with the team and consider feasibility of design as well as what will best suit the client and their market. We present our ideas to the client, then start modelling with engineering software to create 3D renders and 3D prints.

Various 3D prints of custom perfume packaging designs. To the left side are 3D prints made of PLA opaque material. To the left side are 3D prints made of clear resin.

When our client is happy with the look and feel of the the new perfume bottle set we make final technical drawings. We check that all custom perfume packaging components fit well together, then conduct a feasibility study of manufacture. It is necessary to discuss all aspects of manufacture and assess the best materials to achieve the design in addition to cost effectiveness.
Afterwards we study the cost of manufacture and investigate which supplier will be the best fit for the project. We assess other issues such as techniques of decoration and levels of quality control in the factories. Every aspect is considered to ensure that we match the client’s requirements to the project.
What are the Costs of Custom Perfume Packaging?
Costs of custom perfume packaging will depend on the component and also the quality level of the supplier. For now let’s examine the price of components in China which is substantially cheaper than most other countries:
- Glass perfume bottles – new custom perfume bottle moulds can cost between $1500 and $5000 depending on the supplier.
- Custom plastic perfume caps can cost between $1500 and $4000 per plastic mould. Sometimes we require two or three moulds for one plastic cap. Sometimes we only require one mould, like in the situation where we mould a cap from surlyn or K resin.
- Zamac perfume caps are usually less expensive than plastic for custom moulds. The normal range of cost is between $1500 to $3000 for new custom moulds. However, if you also require a new pp insert for the cap, then your cost will rise a lot.
- For custom made paper boxes the costs are lower, the fees are usually just $300.
- Wooden boxes are similar to paper boxes in terms of sampling cost. They also cost around $300 unless you factor in new metal hardware or metal plates for the boxes, which will increase the cost. New moulds have to be made of the hardware which also increases the lead-time.
- Plastic perfume boxes are more expensive, as they required expensive moulds to manufacture. Hence the mould cost of a typical plastic perfume box is around $5000.

Sometimes our clients ask us to develop a custom perfume cap for existing bottles that they have in stock. We developed this cap for RIDE Project for Pakistani celebrity Ajaz Aslam and used an existing standard perfume bottle (see right side). We made a custom metal plate and perfume cap for the standard bottle.

So what strategies can I use to bring down my Custom Perfume Packaging costs?
The most expensive component in a perfume bottle set is always the perfume cap, as plastic is expensive to mould. Therefore you can consider the following:
- Making a custom glass bottle and using a less well known standard plastic cap
- Think of making a cap with a single piece plastic like K resin or Surlyn. If you mould from these materials, then you do not require an additional pp insert for the cap.
- Consider making a zamac cap, which is cheaper to mould. It is especially cost effective if you use a standard pp insert in your new cap. However, zamac material cost per gramme is more, so your packaging cost will be more, despite saving on mould costs. You can consider this strategy for higher priced perfume products.
- Sometimes suppliers will accept to put a custom embossed or debased logo on an existing perfume cap. This helps to differentiate your product, but is not as expensive as making a completely new perfume cap mould.
