The main determinants in the price are the quality of the factory, the quantity and the glass ingredients quality. The advantage of a standard perfume bottle is a shorter lead time for manufacture, as you do not need to factor in time for mould making. It can be very easy to just take an item from the shelf and decorate it to your needs.
Disadvantages of standard perfume bottles
Hundreds of other brands might use your bottle, so your perfume bottle will not be as unique as a tailor made product. How big is the area for printing on the bottle, is it the ideal size for your brand name? A standard bottle has not been designed with any particular brand name or logo size in mind.
Standard perfume caps versus tailored perfume caps
Many standard perfume caps are available on the market in Europe, USA and China from many different cap suppliers, each offering different quality. They can offer a great short cut to enhancing perfume bottles.
Disadvantages of standard perfume caps
Standard caps do not always fit tightly onto the collar of your pump, they can slide off when you hold the bottle from the cap. Some plastics will shrink slightly after use, which makes a cap looser, which is why a custom clicking cap mechanism is better. Standard perfume caps are made with plastic ridges inside the cap to fit onto a smooth aluminium collar around the pump. However, due to variances in pump measurements and small variances in plastic shrinkage, the cap friction is not always enough.
With a standard perfume cap you have to accept the engineering of the cap, so you cannot change anything. The injection point of the cap might be visible and unsightly, however, it is impossible to change its location if you are buying a standard mould. You may be able to add extra weight to a standard cap, but there will be a limit to how much you can add. The structure of the cap cannot change, so you are limited to how much can fit inside the existing structure.
Disadvantages of tailored perfume caps
Plastic injection moulds can be expensive, especially if your cap design requires more complex moulds and more cavities. Therefore the cost of making a new tailored perfume cap may be too much for new perfume brands to bear. Generally the cost will be at least $5000 for a two piece plastic injection cap.
Advantages of tailored perfume caps
If a company is willing and able to finance its own new plastic cap, then they have the ability to control how the cap fits onto the collar or cache pump. It is possible to engineer the plastic inserts of the cap so that they click into position and do not slide off easily.
Another advantage of a custom cap is that you can generally engineer the cap to allow you to add as much weight into it as you need.Most plastic caps are very lightweight, so we add additional weight to make them appear higher quality.
What common problems occur with standard perfume packaging?
When using standard components, it can be difficult to achieve perfect compatibility, as there are always small size variances between suppliers. Sometimes we find a gap between the collar and the bottom of the actuator which does not look attractive. You may have loose caps which are not tight against the collar, actuators which are too high for a cap. Pump measurements vary by small degrees between suppliers, but these small differences can be significant in packaging compatibility.
Sometimes you may need an exact bottle weight and overflow capacity. Most standard perfume bottles are 100ml and 50ml, therefore if you need a different capacity, it can be very difficult to find many options.
