Innovation & Creativity in perfume design
What is an innovative perfume design?
Most perfume designs follow the tried and tested rules of design for perfumery.
These rules usually involve elements of simplicity, elegance and minimalism. But a few brands have dared to be different and the results are stunning….
Bulgari le Gemme is an oriental concept which Bulgari created for middle East selective perfumery clientele. The inspiration for this innovative perfume concept is gemstones.
The House of Sillage : The epitome of luxury. There are many different collections, but the most extravagant is the limited edition collection which has many swarovski crystals.
Marc Jacobs Decadence is certainly extravagant. It’s not the first perfume to be in the shape of a handbag. However, it is certainly the most extravagantly designed bag shape bottle, together with its extra long tassel.
Once more Marc Jacobs is at the forefront of innovative perfume design with Lola! This perfume houses several layers of different colored plastic within the cap to give a multi colored flower effect.
John Galliano perfume breaks all the rules! Thou shalt not be scary. Thou shalt be elegant and sophisticated and simple – NOT! The combination of the unexpected make this a totally different experience. Only risk takers need apply….
They created niche perfume Chic Sheikh from Bahrain with total attention to detail and precision. This perfume bottle fits inside a hard box which then goes inside a flamboyant box tied with ribbons.
The inspiration for Floraiku niche perfume range is Japan. This is a relatively new addition to niche perfumery.
Each miniature purse spray fragrance has a different japanese print and can be refilled from the main bottle. The perfume set is housed in a japanese print inspired hard case.
The House of Oud is a range of oriental perfumes with exquisite hand painting. Each bottle is an individual piece of art resembling a natural stone. A true example of innovative perfume design in structure as well as decoration.
`'Use of spray triggers on perfume bottles = rule breaking creativity `'
Moschino Fresh Couture breaks the rule that we must dispense perfume in a sophisticated bottle with a metal pump. This is the first perfume to use a trigger sprayer to dispense perfume in the same way as a household chemical.
The Daisy range by Marc Jacobs has whimsical decoration with complex plastic cap manufacture. The main target for this perfume is young adolescent women.
Aura by Mugler : A great example of innovative perfume design – a very complex bottle shape and construction. Not only is it difficult to manufacture, but it comes with a unique personality.
la vie est belle L’eclat is truly a great example of product innovation which is difficult to copy. The pattern within the bottle is difficult to manufacture and until now suppliers in France have this advanced technology.
Anna Sui specialises in whimsical perfumes for the teenage market. This particular innovative perfume design is a great example of imagination run wild, the fairground fantasy achieved.
Pleats Please by Issey Miyake breaks many rules with its unusual shape bottle combined with complex cap. Most designers would combine a complex shape bottle with a simple cap, but not Issey Miyake. If you are going to be complicated – go for the full show!
"Creative and innovative design in decoration, pushing the boundaries of technology"
John Varvatos has created several perfumes with innovative perfume design on the covering of the bottle. Oud by John Varvatos is the most complex to achieve in our opinion.
Swarovski first launched Aura and then Miss Aura. It is one of the first designer perfume bottles which is refillable. It has a custom made Swarovski diamond at the top of the bottle. Why not if you have your own lead glass crystal factory?!!
Life Threads perfume was the first big brand to put together different layers of glass one on top of the other. This inspirationally innovative perfume design has golden or silver threads running around the inner bottle. A flawless piece of product design. Who cares what the perfume smells like when the bottle is this attractive!
"Complex creative perfume design"
Valentina by Valentino has a highly unusual innovative spray atomizer which looks highly decorative. The bottle has extremely attractive rose flower decorations hanging from a transparent collar around the neck of the bottle.
Conclusion
According to Marc Rosen, world famous perfume bottle designer ” The bottle is the silent salesman. The consumer sees it on an ad, online or on counter. The consumer sees it on an ad, online or on counter. It needs to speak to them so they think ‘I want to touch that”.
For that reason the communication between the bottle design, the box and the juice inside the bottle must be consistent. The box design must also deliver on design and what the perfume stands for. Over promising is a fatal flaw, miscommunication is another way to lead to dismal sales. Innovative perfume design can attract and inspire, but the other elements must work in harmony to create a cohesive product.
It is worth noting that nowadays there is a strong trend towards simple, heavy high quality bottles. Because the focus and emphasis is on the perfume inside the bottle. Many consumers favour this approach, so before investing heavily in innovative packaging, see if this is really what they want.
